Submission Guidelines

Eligibility

The JMMLA does not review articles that are currently under review by other journals. Additionally, the Journal does not consider for publication essays submitted by undergraduates; contributing authors to the JMMLA must be pursuing or hold a graduate degree. Lastly, contributing authors to the JMMLA are required to hold an active MMLA membership at the time of publication.

Submission Instructions

Submissions should be prepared according to the MLA Handbook, 9th edition, and uploaded as Word documents to Manuscript ManagerNote: Our double-blind review process requires contributing authors to anonymize their submissions before uploading them to Manuscript Manager. This includes removing any information from the submission that indicates the author(s) of the article. Refer to the directions regarding anonymizing submissions found in Manuscript Manager to learn more.

Submissions should be written in English, Spanish, French, or German; when text in another language is quoted, translations into English should be provided. In general, articles should not exceed 10,000 words in length and should be at least 4,000 words. In the event that an essay includes materials that have been taken from another source (e.g., quotations not acceptable as fair use, illustrations, charts, other graphs), the author must obtain written permission to reproduce them in print and electronic formats.

Contributing authors are expected to review carefully and conform to the format guidelines listed in our concise JMMLA Style Guide and JMMLA Manuscript Manager Instructions.

Authors may also review the Manuscript Manager tutorial guide in either workflow demonstration or article format to reference additional details on submitting an essay.
